Study Abroad in India...

Study in India With booming global high-tech industries, colorful markets, well-respected universities and a rich history and culture, India provides many opportunities for study abroad students. While some students will choose to spend a semester immersed in a local community (three-fourths of India's population lives in villages), others will thrive on the chance to live in one of the world's most populated, exciting cities.

The seventh-largest country in the world and the second most populous, India is divided into 28 states and six union territories. Its capital, Delhi, contains the most universities in India. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, for example, is known as one of the best medical institutions in the world. In addition, students interested in the arts and social sciences can attend Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. Bangalore, located in southern India, is known as the hub of India's booming information-technology industry. Mumbai (Bombay) is India's largest city and port, and the center of the country's finance and business sector. Film students will enjoy everything "Bollywood" has to offer, as more films are produced in Bombay than in Hollywood.

Generally speaking, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Information Technology are the country's strongest university programs. Students who want to study engineering and technology may want to look into the Indian Institute of Technology located in Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur and Mumbai. The Indian Institutes of Management located throughout India, the Xavier's Labour Research Institute in Jamshedpur, and the S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research in Mumbai offer fine management programs. International students must complete entrance exams for admission into an Indian university.

History students will find themselves intrigued with India's ancient and varied history. From 3300 to 1700 B.C., the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the world's most ancient civilizations, flourished here. This Bronze Age civilization was followed by the Iron Age Vedic period, and the birth of Mahavira and Gautama Buddha in the 6th century B.C. Mughal rulers brought Islam to the subcontinent early in the 8th century from Central Asia. At the height of the Mughal period, between 10th and 15th century A.D. and even after, the arts and architecture flourished in India. Between the mid-18th century and the 1900s, India was gradually annexed by the British East India Company. India's freedom movement began with Mahatma Gandhi in the 1920s and succeeded in 1947 after being partitioned into India and Pakistan; the latter's eastern wing became the nation of Bangladesh in 1971. India became a democratic republic in 1950. Today, Hindi and English are the country's official languages but many regional languages such as Bengali, Tamil and Punjabi are also widely spoken.

Religion majors will find that numerous religions exist alongside Hinduism, reflecting Indians' belief in religious freedom. Students interested in biology or zoology will enjoy the diverse wildlife, including elephant herds, Bengal tigers and the barking deer. And, of course, nobody studying in India should miss seeing the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the world.

A caste system still exists to some extent in India. Traditionally, castes are determined by occupation and include: Brahman (priests), Kshatriya (warriors), Vaisya (traders) and Sudra (laborers). Society in India revolves around the family, and it is common for several different generations to reside in the same house. Loyalty, respect\and a strong sense of community are central Indian values. Hospitality is also a core part of Indian culture. The famed Sanskrit saying "Atithi Devo Bhava" translates roughly into, "The guest is God and should be treated as such."

In the past decade, India has enjoyed significant economic progress in the global marketplace. It has established itself as a center for big business, while preserving ancient traditions. This diversity, coupled with the friendly and inviting Indian culture and the prevalence of English, makes the country an ideal destination for studying abroad.

Australian way of studying

Australia offers an education experience that makes a real difference.

In Australia you will be expected to conduct independent research at all institutions, especially at university. You will be encouraged to collect and analyse data by yourself or in teams, to raise questions, to develop an argument in a logical form and to participate in discussion and debate with other students and teachers.

The Australian education style is unique from our schools to our universities. In our schools students are taught creative and independent thinking in a dynamic learning environment.

These skills are honed in our universities, where great importance is placed on developing the ability to think creatively and independently, read widely and critically, participate in debate and function in teams.

Australia's career-focussed vocational education and training encourages you to be an independent and active learner, both in the classroom and in work environments.

Australian English language courses are practical, interactive and cater for everyone from beginners to advanced students to teacher training.

All this involves you taking an active part in the learning process rather than passive listening and rote learning. At university or a vocational education and training institution you will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials but you will also spend time in libraries and laboratories conducting your own research. Most institutions in Australia offer counselling services and assistance to develop your study skills.

Assessment methods

Each secondary school in Australia determines its own assessment method. In the final year of school you are assessed through a mixture of school-based and external exams. The Senior Secondary Certificate of Education is issued on the basis of the final results. Universities use these certificates as an admission guideline.

Assessment methods for vocational education and training institutions and for coursework programs at universities vary. You may be assessed by examination towards the end of each semester and/or academic year, by continuous assessment through essays, presentations and tests or a combination of these.

Assessment of a postgraduate research student is made by a committee that evaluates the quality of the student's thesis. The committee may ask you to take an oral examination to support your thesis.

Entry requirements

You should check with the institution of your choice about what courses are offered in distance mode and the entry requirements. You will probably need a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12) or an equivalent certificate from another country for admission to undergraduate distance education in Australia. Admission into a distance education course is also possible by demonstrating maturity, motivation, work experience in a relevant area and through mature age special entrants' schemes.

Distance education australia

A variety of Australian education and training programs are offered offshore. These programs allow you to obtain Australian qualifications in your own country or to combine study at home with study in Australia.

Australian institutions use leading-edge technologies and innovative approaches to deliver flexible learning programs that can be tailored to your needs. Where an Australian university offers courses at an offshore campus or through an agent, the institution will be expected to maintain standards at least equivalent to those provided in Australia and carry full responsibility for all aspects of delivery. However, it is important to know that Australian Government quality assurance measures can only extend to students who are in Australia and enrolled in a registered institution and course.

Distance education courses are delivered by public and private institutions in Australia. Here are some examples of the way distance education can be delivered to you:

  • courses taught in association with institutions in your country to ensure that they are appropriate to local conditions and adequately serviced by readily accessible staff
  • Australian institutions having set-up regional study centres in other countries
  • courses involving Australian lecturers and tutors providing short periods of face-to-face tuition
  • on-line interactive courses delivered via the Internet

Tertiary Entrance Exams underway

Tertiary Entrance Exams

Around 14,000 students begin sitting Tertiary Entrance Exams around Western Australia today. (Jonathan Beal)

Thousands of high school students are starting their Tertiary Entrance Exams today with Geography the first exam on the timetable.

Almost 14,000 students are sitting the exams this year - ten per cent more than last year.

The T-E-E exams conclude on November 21 with Geology.

Bill Louden from the Curriculum Council says students are sitting the exams at 178 schools both in Western Australia and countries including Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

"Some of them are Australian students travelling and in some cases particular overseas colleges with a focus on international aspirations of their students choose to sit for our exams," he said.

MR Bill says three new courses are being examined this year.

"English, media production and analysis and engineering studies, so there's one course which has been examined last year, which was Aviation and three new ones and there'll be some more new courses next year, so the implementation comes in over a number of years."
